Effective Advocacy with Business Sector Support

Effective advocacy is always a problem for NGOs as cost and penetration seem to be directly linked. On 27th May, JOICFP was exclusively featured in one of FM Mie's most popular shows, Goody GoodDay, hosted by the radio personality Hirose Takahashi. For 60 minutes, Hideyuki Takahashi, Director, Resource Development and Campaign, JOICFP, spoke about JOICFP's international activities and projects. FM Mie, which covers nearly 10 million people in over 3 million households, has been cooperating with JOICFP in its domestic campaign, encouraging listeners to send in used prepaid cards and stamps.

The host asked Takahashi to simply explain to listeners how JOICFP directly helps people at the grassroots level, how JOICFP was different from other development NGOs and organizations, such as UNICEF, and what listeners could do to assist JOICFP.

Takahashi explained that JOICFP-supported community driven programs delivered family planning solutions for the individual, and thereby population issues as a whole. He said that JOICFP took a holistic approach, including family planning, reproductive health and services, and nutrition, as well as healthcare. Even small contributions from the public, he said, could make a big difference to save mothers' lives in developing countries. Takahashi also spoke about the randoseru (school backpack) campaign, which is assisting school children in Afghanistan.

The program was sponsored by various private companies, and helped to raise their profile with the public in connection with international cooperation and development. If the message of international cooperation is professionally processed, businesses are willing to support organizations such as NGOs that often face great financial challenges.
