Helping Each Other
- Private Sector and NGOs Work Together
Since 1994, The Ebara Association of Enterprise Management
(EAEM) has been supporting JOICFP with popular fund-raising
activities and events. Member organizations are encouraged
to collect used prepaid cards and stamps, and from JOICFP
receive regular feedback on how monies gathered are used to
better the lives of those in developing countries.
From 7th to 17th June, a six-member team headed by Hideyuki Takahashi, Director, Resource Development and Campaign, JOICFP, comprising three JOICFP staff and three representatives from EAEM, visited JOICFP project sites in Tanzania.
The purpose of the visit was to show concrete results
to EAEM of their support, encourage local NGOs, and provide
EAEM with information to motivate its members towards further
social contribution.
The funding of the integrated project in Tanzania has now
shifted from only direct contributions to raising funds through,
for example, the selling of coffee and local art. However,
the concepts of reproductive of health are often difficult
to understand, and the idea of safe motherhood is now an emerging
international trend. The visitors met with the Tanzania Family
Planning Association (UMATI) to explain this and to encourage
UMATI to market its activities in new and appropriate ways,
as well as thank them for their commitment to the project.

Relationships between the north and south can be furthered
through activities that raise awareness, including photographs,
reports and interviews. As a result of the long economic stagnation
in Japan, EAEM is looking for new ways to sustain the motivation
of its members, and visits such as this provide real examples
of the big difference to people's lives that small contributions
make. The EAEM representatives were also able to see the commitment
of the volunteer Community-based Distributors who are the
foundation of JOICFP's activities

After Tanzania, the mission visited the IPPF in London.
Japan is one of the largest contributors to IPPF, money that
comes from the Japanese taxpayer. One of EAEM's activities
is to assist its members in making correct tax returns and
in speaking with IPPF the representatives were able to better
understand how Japanese tax money is utilized.
