Tie-up with Private Sector Reaches the Public

NYK Line is now commemorating its 120th year anniversary, and as part of events celebrating this milestone, the NYK Maritime Museum is holding an exhibition entitled "The Earth is our Home." From 3rd September to 27th November 2005, visitors will be able to see a series of specialized exhibits, including a display and presentation by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

JOICFP is holding a poster presentation showing that one women a minute in the world dies from delivery and pregnancy related complications; the huge gap in maternal mortality between Tanzania and Japan; how health workers on donated reconditioned bicycles are able to deliver care to people at the grassroots level in developing countries; and how schoolchildren in Afghanistan benefit from the reconditioned backpacks they receive from Japanese children.

NYK has been supporting JOICFP and the MCCOBA program by shipping these and other reconditioned items to the recipients free of charge.

The JOICFP display also shows the five simple items contained in a 'safe delivery kit' for use at the grassroots level, and explains how members of the public can support JOICFP's activities.

In addition to the museum display, NYK is expanding its support even further by having the museum shop sell JOICFP goods that benefit people at the grassroots. These products include Kilimanjaro coffee, 'Tingatinga' art, and the book Pika-Pika, which tells the story of a reconditioned bicycle's journey from Japan to Africa.

In October at the museum, JOICFP is planning to hold story telling sessions, reading from Pika-Pika, and to report on outreach activities in developing countries.

Private enterprises like to be seen to be socially responsible. However, it is up to NGOs to make concrete proposals to the corporate sector that highlight the benefits for both parties of tie-ups between the two.
