Global Network Promotes RH,
Increases Project Efficiency

JOICFP's DigiPlan archive now contains over 40,000 indexed items of digital media, including text, print, still photography, and audio-visual materials, that can be used in a myriad of ways in reproductive health and population related activities around the world.

In August 2004, JOICFP started collaboration with selected counterparts to develop regional digital databases that can be networked through a project called 'DigiNet' (DigiPlan Networking) in order to provide better content and capacity to all archive users.

JOICFP's counterparts for DigiNet are: in Asia, the Shanghai International Center for Population Communication (SICPC), China; in Africa, the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG); and in Latin America, the Mexican Family Planning Association (MEXFAM). All the centers will hold the sum total of digital information gathered under the project.

JOICFP supports partner organizations with technical training in database construction and management, based on its eight years of experience with DigiPlan. JOICFP also provides the database software and platform for database development.

DigiNet is expected to serve two major functions. One, is to assist project implementers at the grassroots level retain valuable information for use in future projects. Two, is to provide information to donors about projects so that future activities can be better planned, and to advocate the need for additional projects.

The stages in development of a DigiNet archive are:

- Preparation of digital materials in appropriate formats

- Categorization of prepared materials

- Linking, or programming as it is called, the prepared materials into an accessible database

From 24th to 27th July, a five-member JOICFP team, headed by Atsushi Yoshino, Director, Media Communications, delivered technical training in DigiNet development to SICPC, focusing on pre-programming and database development skills, and discussing future activities in DigiNet development and BCC collaboration, both regionally and globally.

SICPC has good experience in IEC material production with its modern facilities and capacity. However, there is no mechanism to allow sharing of information and materials. SICPC is now in the process of digitizing its completed video and print materials, continuing with component materials at a later date.

JOICFP is expected to send another mission to SICPC once SICPC has reached the programming stage, to further assist with DigiNet development.
