10th Matsumoto Award

On 27th March, the 10th Matsumoto Award ceremony was held in Tokyo in honor of Dr. Seiichi Matsumoto, President, Japan Family Planning Association (JFPA), and a pioneer of obstetrics and gynecology in Japan.

This year, the recipient was Dr. Yuji Taketani M.D., Chairman, Dept. Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Tokyo, and Chairperson, Executive Board, Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (JSOG).

He becomes the 20th medical professional to have been awarded for contributions to advancing and improving the fields of reproductive health (RH), family planning, or contraceptive and medical technology.

Dr. Taketani was recognized for his RH research on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of uterine endometriosis, and on dysmenorrhea among working women and its relationship their social and economic conditions. One of his findings was that excessive dieting has a high potential to lead to permanent cessation of menstruation.

He was also recognized for his work in revising recent guidelines on the usage of the low-dose oral contraceptive pill in Japan, making them easier to understand and less burdensome.

The selection committee for the Matsumoto Award comprised members of JFPA, JOICFP, JSOG, and the Japanese Society of Fertility and Sterility.
